They Call it Devil's Campground for a Reason!

We spent yesterday at Devil's Lake and Campground in Baraboo, WI (about 2 1/2 hours from our house). Jacob had recently camped there with the scouts and told us what a great time he had bouldering up and down the cliffs. I have no idea why we thought is sounded fun, but it did. We played hookie from church (which is undeard of in the Ruoss household) and drove up to the State Park with my sister's family. After a picnic we headed off to the cliffs. We were a sight to behold...four adults and seven children bouldering up and then back down the 'mountain'. It all seemed like fun and games until we came to the part of the trail that was no longer trail...it was open boulders needing to be climbed. Believe it or not, up was easier than down. At one point my sister pretty much lost it watching her youngest (5 year old Caleb who has slow developing motor skills) climbing down the cliffs. She eventually had to take the lead at the head of the group so that she couldn't see her kids. They all did great with no injuries. Jacob was a bit frustrated that it took us old folks a lot longer to go up and down than it did his fellow scouts, but he was proud to have introduced us to our first bouldering experience. After we bouldered and kissed the flat ground at the bottom, the adults let the kids swim while we collapsed. Overall, it was a great day and the views were fabulous!
